Micron Solutions is conducting a nationwide search for an experienced Injection Mold Tooling Manager to provide hands-on technical leadership for our injection molding tooling operations in Fitchburg, Massachusetts.You do not need to currently hold a Manager title to be considered.
We are looking for a mold-making expert first and a manager second. The ideal candidate has built their career designing, building, repairing, fitting, modifying, and troubleshooting injection molds and still enjoys being actively involved in tooling work today.
This Is NOT a Desk-Based Management Position This position is designed for a tooling professional who wants to remain closely connected to the work itself.
You will spend a significant portion of your time:
- Working directly with Mold Makers and Tool Room personnel
- Diagnosing mold-related production and quality issues
- Supporting mold repairs, modifications, and troubleshooting efforts
- Participating in mold trials, qualifications, and production support
- Identifying opportunities to improve mold reliability, tool life, and performance
- Providing technical leadership through experience and hands-on problem solving
If you are seeking a primarily administrative, project management, or office-based management role, this position is unlikely to be the right fit. Our injection molding operations include presses ranging from 55 to 300 tons, supporting commercial, medical device, engineering, and technical applications.
What You'll Do
Lead Through Technical Expertise
- Serve as the technical expert for injection mold tooling, troubleshooting, repair, maintenance, and modification
- Diagnose complex mold-related production and part-quality issues and drive them to resolution
- Remain actively involved in mold repair, fitting, assembly, maintenance, and troubleshooting activities
- Partner directly with Mold Makers, Process Technicians, Engineering, Quality, Maintenance, and Production teams to resolve tooling challenges
- Provide technical direction, coaching, and mentorship to Tool Room personnel
Drive Tooling Performance
- Coordinate new mold builds, repairs, preventive maintenance activities, engineering changes, and outside tooling work
- Review mold designs and provide practical mold-making and Design for Manufacturability (DFM) input
- Support mold trials, validation activities, and production releases
- Identify and eliminate recurring causes of tooling failures, scrap, downtime, and quality issues
- Drive continuous improvements in mold reliability, performance, maintainability, and tool life
Manage Tool Room Priorities
- Prioritize Tool Room projects and resources to support production requirements
- Ensure critical tooling issues are addressed quickly and effectively
- Help establish and maintain best practices for mold maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, and documentation
- Support department planning, staffing, and workload balancing
Required Qualifications
- 10+ years of hands-on experience in injection mold making, mold repair, maintenance, and troubleshooting
- Extensive experience building, fitting, modifying, and optimizing injection molds
- Strong knowledge of mold construction, steel selection, cooling systems, gating, venting, and mold performance optimization
- Demonstrated success diagnosing and resolving mold-related production and quality issues
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, mold designs, GD&T, and technical specifications
- Experience with precision machining equipment, tool room practices, and mold repair techniques
- Proven ability to lead projects, prioritize competing demands, and drive results
- Strong root-cause analysis and problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills
- Ability to work effectively with Engineering, Quality, Maintenance, Production, and Processing teams
- High school diploma or equivalent
Preferred Qualifications
- Journeyman Mold Maker certification, Tool & Die apprenticeship, or equivalent formal training
- Previous leadership, supervisory, or Tool Room management experience
- Experience supporting medical device manufacturing or other highly regulated industries
- Experience with mold validation activities, including IQ/OQ/PQ processes
- Knowledge of DFM principles and mold design reviews
- Associate's degree or technical degree in Manufacturing, Tooling, Engineering Technology, or a related field
- Experience with high-cavitation, tight-tolerance, or complex injection mold tooling
