Redefine how architecture gets produced
Saltz Michelson Architects (SMA) has been designing Florida's buildings for more than 50 years. Our work covers healthcare, aviation, government, education, public safety, multifamily, mixed-use, hospitality, data centers, and more. We usually serve as prime consultant and Architect of Record, so how we produce drawings directly affects our clients, our consultants, and our results.
AI and automation are changing how drawings get made. We want a leader who knows both how drawings are actually produced and where the technology is headed, and who can use that knowledge and best use.
Why this role
- You'll be part of firm leadership. You'll help set the firm's direction and take part in firm-wide decisions.
- You'll own production. You'll lead the production team and decide how SMA produces its work.
- You'll own the technology roadmap. You'll decide which tools, platforms, and AI practices the firm adopts.
- You'll still build things. You'll write the firm-wide tools, scripts, plug-ins, and integrations that connect our platforms and remove repetitive work.
- You'll see the impact quickly. We're a firm of about 30 people, so a better workflow reaches every project.
What you'll do
Lead
- Take part in leadership meetings, planning, and firm-wide decisions.
- Set and deliver goals for production and technology.
- Advise on production capacity, staffing, and hiring based on workload and pipeline.
Set technology strategy
- Build and maintain the firm's technology roadmap. Prioritize by impact on production, quality, and profitability.
- Recommend software, hardware, and tool investments, and measure their return.
- Evaluate, test, and approve new technology, and set firm policy on AI use.
Run production
- Lead the production team, including assigning work, developing staff, and guiding hiring and promotions.
- Set production schedules, balance workloads, and resolve resource conflicts before they affect deadlines.
- Help principals and PMs estimate the hours and staffing projects realistically need, including the time our tools save.
- Own firm-wide production QC, and build checks into the process, including validation of AI-assisted output.
- Set direction for the firm's BIM/CAD standards.
Automate and improve
- Roll out AI and emerging tools that produce better drawings faster.
- Write firm-wide custom tools, scripts, plug-ins, and integrations.
- Redesign production workflows to remove bottlenecks and manual work.
- Set training priorities and lead firm-wide rollout of new tools.
Who you are
You combine three skills that are rarely found together:
- deep knowledge of architectural, engineering, and construction production
- the ability to develop software
- leadership experience.
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, or a related field
- 10+ years in architectural or engineering production, including 3+ years in leadership
- Strong knowledge of how A/E/C documents are produced
- Revit and BIM expertise
- Software development and programming ability
- Experience directing a production team and taking part in firm-level decisions
- A proven record of identifying, building, and implementing process or technology improvements with production teams
Preferred
- Background in design technology, automation, or computational design
- Hands-on experience applying AI to design or production workflows
- AutoCAD experience
- Architectural license
