• Hand tooling the hot mix: The Lute man is the last person to touch the fresh asphalt before the roller compacts it. Using a rake or "lute" tool, they spread, smooth, and tamp the material to the correct grade and thickness
• Repairing imperfections: They rake and lute the surface to fix bumps, voids, or uneven spots, ensuring a uniform finish
• Matching and finishing joints: They align and blend fresh asphalt with existing pavement or joints for a seamless look
• Preparing surfaces: Before paving, they may rake or broom the base to ensure proper adhesion
• Assisting with other tasks: Depending on the crew, they may help distribute asphalt, spray release agents, or assist with traffic control and barricades
