Urgent Care Physician

Merion Health Partners

Conshohocken, Pennsylvania

Job description

Medical Director

Merion Health Partners (MHP) Philadelphia Region, PA

Working Physician Leadership Role Approximately 75% Clinical / 25% Administrative

Position Summary

MHP is seeking a practicing physician leader to serve as Medical Director across our multi-site urgent care organization. This is a working physician leadership role combining regular clinical practice with approximately 25% protected administrative time focused on physician governance, provider leadership, clinical performance, education and medical oversight. The ideal candidate is an experienced urgent care physician who enjoys practicing medicine while serving as a visible, accessible and accountable leader for the provider team, modeling MHP s Core Values through clinical practice, leadership, and everyday interactions.

MHP operates a dual clinical-leadership model that separates physician medical leadership from administration of the broader clinical-quality infrastructure. The Medical Director owns physician judgment, provider clinical leadership, education, competency and medical governance, while partnering with MHP's executive clinical-quality function, Operations and Human Resources.

Organizational Structure

The Medical Director partners with the COO, Operations, Human Resources and MHP's executive clinical-quality partner. The executive clinical-quality function owns CQOS, quality analytics and reporting, quality-program infrastructure, policy governance, Clinical Quality Committee administration, laboratory and clinical research strategy, ancillary clinical initiatives, innovation and executive clinical reporting.

What Success Looks Like

Success means accessible physician leadership, clear clinical standards, stronger provider relationships, consistent clinical accountability, effective APP oversight and measurable improvement in provider clinical performance.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Practice & Visible Physician Leadership 75% (down to 50%)

  • Maintain an active clinical practice across MHP urgent care locations and model MHP's standards for patient care, documentation, productivity and professionalism.
  • Serve as a visible, accessible physician leader, building trusted provider relationships through regular clinical presence, coaching and communication.
  • Provide real-time physician consultation and support for complex cases, clinical questions and provider decision-making.
  • Maintain sufficient presence across the organization to understand provider workflow, clinical challenges and opportunities for improvement firsthand.

Physician Governance & Medical Oversight 25% (up to 50%)

  • Serve as the physician authority for clinical standards, protocols and matters requiring licensed physician judgment or approval.
  • Serve in required physician-governance capacities for MHP's professional clinical entities, including PC ownership, subject to applicable legal and corporate documentation.
  • Provide physician oversight of advanced practice providers and MHP's collaborative-practice structure, including required chart review, co-signature and other physician-level responsibilities as applicable.
  • Lead or participate in peer review, clinical case review and provider-specific quality matters requiring physician evaluation.
  • Support credentialing and clinical competency determinations where physician review is required.
  • Review and approve clinical policies, protocols, standing orders and other matters requiring physician authorization.

Provider Performance, Education & Development

  • Own physician-level assessment of individual provider clinical performance and determine when identified findings require coaching, education, remediation or competency intervention.
  • Lead provider education and clinical development based on demonstrated clinical needs and quality findings.
  • Establish and maintain clinical competency expectations for physicians and APPs, including participation in onboarding, precepting and clinical-readiness assessment of new providers.
  • Partner with Operations and Human Resources on provider performance matters, providing clinical judgment and recommendations while Operations and HR retain responsibility for employment administration.
  • Support provider-specific clinical performance improvement plans, including establishment of measurable expectations and reassessment of identified deficiencies.

Clinical Quality & Patient Safety Partnership

  • Serve as the physician partner to MHP's executive clinical-quality function, providing medical judgment and physician leadership in support of MHP's broader clinical-quality infrastructure.
  • Review quality findings, patient-safety events and clinical trends requiring physician interpretation and translate system-level findings into appropriate provider-level clinical action.
  • Participate in clinical quality governance and committee activities where physician expertise or authorization is required.
  • Participate in significant clinical incident review and determine appropriate physician/provider response, including education, remediation, peer review or escalation when indicated.
  • Own physician-level external patient communications involving clinical concerns, adverse outcomes or significant patient-safety events, coordinating with Operations, Risk Management and other appropriate stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • MD or DO with unrestricted Pennsylvania medical license, or ability to obtain prior to start.
  • Board certification in an appropriate specialty such as Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine or other disciplines appropriate to urgent care practice.
  • Willingness and eligibility to fulfill required physician-governance and professional entity responsibilities, including PC ownership.
  • Demonstrated experience practicing in urgent care, emergency medicine or a comparable high-volume ambulatory environment.
  • Experience leading, mentoring or supervising providers is strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of APP collaboration/supervision, peer review, clinical competency and provider performance management.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to establish credibility with providers.
  • Comfortable using performance and quality data to guide clinical conversations and improvement.
Willingness to maintain a substantial active clinical practice while fulfilling defined leadership responsibilities.
