Qualifications:

We are seeking an experienced Civil Draftsman to prepare detailed civil drawings, grading plans, site plans, and construction documents for heavy civil and industrial projects.


The ideal candidate will have strong experience with AutoCAD and Civil 3D, along with knowledge of grading, stormwater management, utilities, surveying, and construction requirements. This position will work closely with engineers, surveyors, project managers, site managers, and construction personnel to develop accurate design documents and support projects from initial field data collection through construction.


The position combines office-based CAD drafting and design work with occasional field visits to collect and verify information, observe construction activities, and coordinate with project teams.


Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in civil drafting, CAD design, engineering, construction, or surveying, with demonstrated experience producing civil plans and construction documents.
  • 8+ years of combined experience in engineering, construction, surveying, or a related field is preferred.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Degree or technical education in engineering, surveying, construction, drafting, or a related field is preferred.
  • Strong proficiency with AutoCAD and Civil 3D.
  • Experience developing grading designs using Civil 3D.
  • Experience with Civil 3D feature lines, corridors, surfaces, and manual grading methods.
  • Knowledge of basic stormwater management calculations, stormwater treatment methods, pipe sizing, drainage, erosion prevention, and sediment control.
  • Knowledge of land surveying, including site controls, coordinate systems, datums, field data processing, and survey instrumentation.
  • Field surveying experience is preferred; willingness to learn field surveying techniques is a plus.
  • Ability to work with survey information and field-collected data to develop accurate base mapping and construction drawings.
  • Experience working with point clouds, LiDAR, and other survey/data formats is preferred.
  • Knowledge of construction requirements and the ability to understand how drawings translate into field construction.
  • Knowledge of concrete construction, concrete paving, utilities, structural construction, and electrical systems is a plus.
  • Ability to research and incorporate information related to zoning, design regulations, permit requirements, floodplains, wetlands, and soil conditions.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment with engineers, surveyors, construction personnel, and project managers.
  • Willingness to travel approximately 10-20%, depending on project requirements.

Responsibilities

Civil Drafting & Design

  • Prepare and revise civil drawings using AutoCAD and Civil 3D.
  • Develop site plans, grading plans, drainage plans, utility layouts, construction plans, profiles, sections, and details.
  • Create grading designs using Civil 3D feature lines, corridors, surfaces, and manual grading methods.
  • Develop construction plan sets that clearly communicate design intent to field and construction teams.
  • Create and maintain accurate base mapping using field-collected data and land surveys.
  • Incorporate survey information in various formats, including point clouds, LiDAR, and other digital survey data.
  • Prepare civil and structural drawings supporting construction, maintenance, site improvements, equipment installation, utilities, grading, and stormwater projects.
  • Make revisions based on engineering markups, field conditions, project requirements, and construction feedback.
  • Prepare and maintain as-built drawings and incorporate field changes into final documentation.
  • Generate and review shop drawings to help confirm they are consistent with the project's design intent.

Field & Construction Support

  • Assist the construction and engineering teams in obtaining accurate field measurements, site information, and other data needed to develop design documents.
  • Visit construction sites to collect and verify field information and observe construction activities.
  • Work with construction managers and engineering personnel to identify and resolve drawing conflicts and construction-related issues.
  • Review project goals with site managers, engineers, and construction team members to determine the information required for design.
  • Identify potential conflicts or missing information before drawings are finalized.
  • Present designs to project team members and incorporate feedback into final construction plans.
  • Attend project meetings and coordinate with field and office personnel as needed.
  • Assist with field surveying and site control activities when required.

Site & Regulatory Research

  • Research and incorporate applicable zoning requirements, design regulations, permitting requirements, floodplain information, wetlands, soils, and other site-specific conditions into project documentation.
  • Assist with identifying site constraints that may affect grading, drainage, utilities, structures, or construction.
  • Maintain accurate project documentation and follow company drafting and design standards.

Preferred Technical Experience

Travel

Approximately 10-20% travel may be required based on project needs.

Travel may include:

  • Collecting and verifying field data
  • Observing construction activities
  • Attending project meetings
  • Verifying existing site conditions
  • Coordinating with construction and engineering personnel

Work Environment

The position will involve a combination of:

  • Office/CAD environment
  • Outdoor construction sites
  • Industrial facilities
  • Scrap metal/recycling yards
  • Active project and construction areas

The employee may encounter heavy equipment, industrial machinery, uneven terrain, noise, dust, and other conditions associated with metals recycling and industrial construction facilities.

All work must be performed in accordance with company safety requirements and applicable site-specific safety procedures.

Physical Requirements

Office & Computer Work

  • Ability to sit at a desk and work at a computer for approximately 8-10 hours per day.
  • Ability to use a computer mouse, keyboard, and specialized CAD/design tools for extended periods.
  • Strong fine motor skills and hand control for detailed drafting and CAD work.

Field & Site Visits

  • Ability to occasionally walk on uneven ground and active construction sites.
  • Ability to collect field measurements and inspect existing conditions.
  • Ability to work around construction equipment and industrial machinery.
  • Ability to wear required PPE, including a hard hat, high-visibility vest, safety footwear, and other site-required protective equipment.
  • Ability to occasionally use or work around field equipment, hand tools, and surveying equipment.
  • Ability to lift up to 70 pounds when required.

Safety

  • Follow all company and project-specific safety requirements.
  • Understand safety considerations associated with scrap metal yards, metals recycling facilities, construction sites, heavy equipment, and industrial operations.
  • Maintain safe work practices during both office and field activities.
  • Immediately communicate unsafe conditions or potential hazards to the appropriate project personnel.
