6-month assignment with one 6-month extension option Anticipated start: October 19, 2026 (pending expedited credentialing)
Position Overview
A full-time Neurologist is needed to provide inpatient, outpatient and telephonic neurology services to Veterans and beneficiaries at the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center (FHCC), a combined VA and Department of Defense facility in North Chicago. The role covers the full range of general neurology in clinic, inpatient units, the ICU and the emergency department, along with weeknight, weekend and holiday on-call coverage. This is a new contract with no incumbent, and the facility needs a physician who can start as soon as credentialing allows.
Key Responsibilities
- Staff the neurology clinic Monday Friday, 8:00 AM 4:30 PM, including new consults, follow-ups, E-Consults and procedures within your privileges
- Round in the ICU, inpatient units and emergency department when requested
- Provide telephonic on-call coverage on rotation: weeknights (Mon 4:30 PM Fri 8:00 AM), weekends (Fri 4:30 PM Mon 8:00 AM) and 24-hour federal holidays
- Answer calls within 15 minutes and report on-site within 60 minutes of an emergency notification; perform weekend rounds (consults and follow-ups) while on call
- Document every face-to-face encounter in the electronic health record immediately after the visit; co-sign resident consults within 24 hours; complete encounter forms the same day and any deficient records within 10 days
- Follow up on and communicate the results of all tests you order
- Involve patients in care decisions through shared decision-making on diagnosis, treatment options, risks and prognosis
Qualifications & Experience
Required
- MD or DO with board certification or board eligibility in Neurology (ABPN)
- Full, unrestricted medical license in any U.S. state, territory or the District of Columbia
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from an American Heart Association recognized provider
- Proficiency in written and spoken English
- Comfortable documenting directly in an electronic health record
- Able to reach the North Chicago facility within 60 minutes while on call
- Able to complete VA credentialing, fingerprinting and a background investigation before starting

- Botox training
- Experience reading EEGs
- Experience with the Oracle Cerner electronic health record (training is provided)

Blended on-site rate: $276.52 $306.52/hour the on-site hourly rate plus the weekly per diem spread over a 40-hour clinic week ($2,060. = $51.52/hour). Per diem amounts follow GSA FY2027 rates for the Chicago (Cook/Lake County) area.
