Cardiac Surgery PA Job Details
- Weekly Estimated Pay: $3,500-$4,140
- Position Type: Locum tenens Physician Assistant opportunity
- Clinical Setting: Inpatient cardiac surgery, cardiac intensive care, and operating room
- Location: Worcester, Massachusetts
- Start Date: January 4, 2027
- End Date: January 3, 2028
- Schedule: Variable shifts of approximately 12-13 hours
- Call: Variable and required for the operating room team, including approximately two nights per week and one weekend per month
- Patient Volume: Approximately 5-10 ICU patients per day and 1-2 operating room cases per day

Physician Assistant Job Requirements
- Current Physician Assistant certification and eligibility to practice
- At least 1 year of clinical experience as a Physician Assistant, preferably in cardiac surgery, cardiothoracic intensive care, cardiovascular critical care, or a related inpatient setting
- Ability to obtain a Massachusetts Physician Assistant license, if not already licensed
- Willingness to obtain a Massachusetts DEA registration and controlled substance registration
- Comfort working variable 12-13-hour shifts and participating in required call coverage
- Strong clinical judgment, communication skills, and ability to work effectively with an interdisciplinary cardiothoracic surgery team
Cardiac Surgery Physician Assistant Responsibilities
- Provide inpatient care for cardiac surgery patients in the intensive care unit and operating room
- Evaluate patients, develop care plans, monitor clinical status, and coordinate treatment with cardiac surgeons and multidisciplinary teams
- Assist with approximately 1-2 operating room cases per day as assigned
- Manage an ICU patient load of approximately 5-10 patients per day
- Perform or assist with central line placement, including dialysis lines, arterial line insertion, and Swan-Ganz catheter procedures
- Perform chest tube insertion, intra-aortic balloon pump removal, and temporary pacing wire removal as clinically indicated
- Provide care for patients supported by LVADs, Impella devices, VA ECMO, ventilators, and intra-aortic balloon pumps
- Participate in overnight and weekend call coverage for the operating room team
- Accurately document patient care, procedures, and clinical updates in Epic
