Staff Design Engineer

Scribe

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Job description

Overview

As a Staff Design Engineer at Scribe, you own Stylus, our design system, across web, desktop, extension, and marketing sites. You blend design sense with frontend engineering to decide what interactions to build and ship them with quality. You'll shape design craft and frontend tooling while enabling AI-ready UI patterns. You work closely with designers and engineers to keep design and code aligned, and mentor others in design principles.

Compensation / Benefits
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Flexible paid time off and holidays
  • 401(k)
  • Paid parental leave
  • Daily catered lunch (SF office)
  • Home office stipend
Responsibilities
  • Own Stylus roadmap, triage, and governance including adoption, accessibility, and documentation health
  • Build hard components balancing aesthetics and performance; define shared primitives vs one-offs
  • Prototype in React/TypeScript and validate with users through interactive demos
  • Collaborate with designers without handoffs; assess build costs for interactions
  • Maintain alignment between design and code; migrate legacy components to the system and maintain Figma-to-code tooling
  • Explore AI-ready design languages and build primitives for model-assembled UI
  • Document prompts, patterns, and workflows; mentor engineers on design principles
  • Contribute to AI workflows and tooling to enable safe usage by designers and PMs
  • Aim for measurable system health: adoption, accessibility coverage, and documentation quality
  • By six months, establish a real Stylus roadmap, active migration, and automated adoption metrics
Key requirements
  • 8+ years of frontend development experience with strong design sensibility
  • deep knowledge of CSS, the DOM, and browser rendering
  • ability to judge when to use native elements vs framework components
  • proven design system experience (components, primitives, tokens, versioning, governance)
  • ability to own a roadmap and say no when needed
  • experience with AI tooling like Cursor and Claude Code
  • default focus on accessibility, keyboard and touch input, and respecting user preferences
  • ability to prototype in code and design with designers directly without handoff
  • experience shipping components and mentoring engineers
  • strong strategic thinking
  • collaborative and cross-functional mindset
  • mentorship and knowledge sharing
  • React
  • TypeScript
  • CSS and browser rendering
