Overview

As a Mechanical Design Engineer at Flex, you will design, develop, and implement automated assembly solutions for high-volume electronics manufacturing. You'll focus on mechanical design and integration of automation cells, robots, EOAT, fastening systems, and vision-enabled equipment. The role is onsite in Austin, TX and centers on improving throughput, quality, and efficiency through robust, manufacturable designs. You will collaborate across teams to bring automation projects from concept to production, impacting overall manufacturing performance.

Responsibilities
  • Design automated assembly cells, workstations, and production equipment to boost throughput and quality
  • Create 3D CAD models, layouts, drawings, BOMs, and documentation
  • Prototype tooling using 3D printing for engineering and automation projects
  • Develop custom automation solutions and EOAT for material handling, assembly, fastening, inspections, and fixtures
  • Perform tolerance analyses, structural calculations, cycle time studies, and mechanical stress evaluations
  • Support commissioning, debugging, validation, and production startup activities
  • Collaborate with Electrical, Controls, Manufacturing, and Quality teams to integrate solutions and controls
  • Coordinate with suppliers and machine builders on custom equipment and tooling
  • Support project planning, cost estimation, purchasing, scheduling, and supplier management
  • Ensure designs meet safety, reliability, manufacturability, and standards
Key requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • 2+ years of experience
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD software (SolidWorks preferred)
  • Experience designing automated manufacturing equipment, robotics, and assembly systems
  • Strong knowledge of industrial robots, EOAT, fastening technologies, conveyors, sensors, and automation hardware
  • Understanding of DFM, DFA, DFR, tolerance analysis, and machine design principles
  • Experience supporting equipment integration, testing, and production launch activities
  • Strong problem-solving, project management, and cross-functional collaboration skills
