Overview As Staff Payroll Tax Processor, you will lead complex payroll tax defect resolution for notices, corrections, and amendments, acting as a technical SME. You'll own the full lifecycle of high-impact cases, mentor junior staff, and drive process improvements to deliver accurate tax outcomes across multiple states. You'll collaborate with cross-functional teams to resolve interconnected issues and scale team capability. This role offers meaningful problem-solving at scale with a focus on customer outcomes.

Responsibilities- Resolve complex State and Federal payroll tax notices end-to-end, including multi-quarter/multi-state and penalty scenarios
- Prepare and file amended Federal and State payroll tax returns (Form 941-X, W-2c) across 10+ states
- Diagnose and fix payroll tax errors spanning multiple periods; trace root causes and drive complete correction workflow
- Maintain high productivity with accurate resolution of Corrections, Amendments, and Notices
- Monitor WIP, identify aging cases and blockers, propose resolutions with root-cause analysis
- Serve as primary real-time resource for Senior Payroll Tax Processors; coach and transfer knowledge
- Conduct structured coaching sessions quarterly with assigned team members
- Author/review SOPs and KB articles; identify recurring errors and propose corrective actions
- Identify trends/compliance issues and drive cross-functional resolutions with stakeholders
- Support cross-functional collaboration with Corrections, Amendments, Pay & File, and Tax Notice teams
Key requirements- 4+ years of payroll tax experience focusing on tax defect resolution for notices, amendments, and corrections across multiple states
- Expert knowledge of state and federal payroll tax notices; ability to draft penalty abatements and agency responses with documentation
- Experience preparing and approving amended Federal (941-X, W-2c) and State returns across multiple states
- Deep knowledge of federal payroll tax law (FICA, FUTA, FITW) and tax payment/filing regulations
- Multi-state payroll tax expertise including reciprocity, resident/nonresident taxation, and SUI
- Experience leading or mentoring, with coaching examples for junior staff
- Advanced Excel for reconciliation and audit trails
- Strong written communication; ability to author actionable SOPs/KBs for tax processors
- Associate's or Bachelor's in Accounting/Finance/Business preferred; equivalent experience accepted
- CPP preferred; EA differentiator; FPC accepted with 5+ years tax defect resolution experience
- Experience at payroll service bureau/PEO or multi-client payroll tax ops preferred
