Accounts Payable Manager

Overview

In this role you lead a remote accounts payable team of ten to ensure accurate, timely, and compliant payments across vendor invoices and travel reimbursements. You will partner with Finance, Procurement, Travel, and Lab divisions to improve end-to-end disbursement processes while maintaining strict internal controls and regulatory compliance. The position emphasizes process modernization, strong governance, and cross-functional collaboration in a high-visibility, DOE-regulated environment. You drive performance, develop the team, and support audit readiness with a focus on impact and integrity.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the accounts payable function across the total disbursement cycle
  • Ensure compliance with Prime Contract, DOE, CAS, GAAP, OMB Circular A-123, and Argonne policies
  • Oversee timely processing of vendor invoices and travel reimbursements
  • Define clear roles and ownership across procure-to-pay processes with stakeholders
  • Manage a large remote team with coaching, accountability, and performance management
  • Navigate and optimize complex financial systems and workflows
  • Establish and report operational and compliance metrics
  • Maintain disbursement policies and internal controls
  • Identify inefficiencies and implement practical improvements
  • Lead cross-functional initiatives to improve systems, controls, and end-to-end flow
  • Build partnerships with internal stakeholders to resolve issues and advance goals
  • Support audit readiness and respond to reviews and inquiries
  • Demonstrate sound judgment in escalations and prioritization

Key requirements
  • Knowledge of CAS, GAAP, and OMB Circular A-123 (preferred)
  • Strong understanding of AP operations, including 3-way match
  • Experience in a regulated, high-compliance environment; DOE or federal contractor experience preferred
  • Ability to lead in complex systems and processes within regulatory constraints (e.g., FedRAMP)
  • Experience designing or maturing operational processes, controls, and metrics
  • Proven leadership of a large, diverse team with different personalities and skill levels
  • Project management and process improvement experience from conception to implementation
  • Strong collaboration and cross-departmental teamwork
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines and manage multiple priorities
