The FHMD Teaching Artist Model
Our teaching artists bring their own creativity and expertise to the classroom. Programs may use FHMD's existing class offerings or be developed around an instructor's particular area of expertise.
Classes are designed to give participants opportunities to learn, create, practice skills, collaborate, and explore new ideas. Teaching artists develop lessons appropriate for the students they are serving and may incorporate both hands-on activities and instructional content.
FHMD works with qualified teaching artists in multiple states. New opportunities are added throughout the year, with many programs taking place during Fall, Winter, and Spring school sessions. Summer camps and other seasonal programs may also be available.
Because many of our instructors are working artists, performers, educators, or freelancers, assignments can often be incorporated around other professional commitments.
What to Expect
Most FHMD teaching opportunities follow this general format:
Program length: Approximately 6 10 weeks
Frequency: One class per week
PreK classes: Typically 45 minutes
Other classes: Typically 60 minutes
Location: Primarily in person
Students: PreK 5th, 6th 12th, and 50+ adults
Teaching artists are asked to identify the subjects they can teach and the age groups they are prepared to serve. Instructors may also suggest new class ideas for consideration.
Please note: Joining the FHMD teaching artist roster does not guarantee an assignment. We continue looking for opportunities for approved instructors based on their qualifications, availability, location, and program needs.
When a potential assignment is identified, FHMD sends the instructor a formal offer by email. The instructor must respond within 24 hours by accepting the offer, discussing a modification, or declining it. Available assignments may be offered to another qualified instructor if an offer is not accepted within that timeframe.
Pay
Teaching artists are paid on a per-class basis.
Expected compensation: $40 $60 per minute class.
The stated range reflects the compensation FHMD reasonably anticipates offering for this role across the United States. Individual assignments may fall at different points within the range depending on factors such as enrollment and program funding.
Contract Status & Benefits
This is a contracted teaching artist position, not a traditional employee position.
FHMD does not provide health insurance, retirement benefits, paid vacation, paid sick leave, or other employer-sponsored benefits. In exchange, teaching artists have flexibility to indicate their availability and accept assignments that work with their schedules.
