Overview

In this role you will lead administration and financial operations for a nonprofit's multi-state retirement, pension, and benefits programs. You will oversee accounting, budgeting, compliance, and audits, ensuring GAAP adherence and ERISA compliance. You will mentor department leaders, drive cross-functional collaboration, and report program performance to senior leadership and boards. The position offers influence over plan design changes, trust administration, and multi-state rollouts, aligning operations with the organization's mission and governance standards. This is a strategic, people-centric leadership role that shapes program administration and regulatory compliance at scale.

Responsibilities
  • Provide strategic leadership and operational management for retirement, pension, and benefits programs across multiple states
  • Oversee department operations and financial administration
  • Oversee financial department activities including budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, and audit preparation in accordance with GAAP
  • Ensure compliance with ERISA, federal and state regulations, and plan documents; coordinate legal and regulatory reviews as needed
  • Listen to and mentor department leaders, establish performance objectives, and build cross-functional team capabilities
  • Prepare and present data-driven program performance, financial status, and risk reports to senior leadership and governing boards
  • Lead complex projects including plan design changes, trust administration updates, and multi-state rollouts
Key requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field
  • 5+ years of experience managing benefits for nonprofit organizations, pension, or retirement programs with accounting responsibilities
  • Demonstrated leadership in Accounting and GAAP, including financial statement preparation and audit support
  • Experience with unionized workforces and acting as liaison during collective bargaining and contract implementation
  • Strong knowledge of ERISA, pension plan administration, trust management, and regulatory compliance
  • Experience in multi-state program management and handling different state laws and reporting requirements
