Lead Environmental Compliance Manager (Owner's Advisor) (Field Based)

Overview

In this role you serve as the owner's environmental representative for hyperscale data center construction across multiple states, translating permit conditions into actionable field practices. You collaborate with project teams, contractors, consultants, and the EHS function to identify risks and improve environmental performance. The position combines field verification with program oversight to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal requirements. This is a hands-on leadership role with a focus on driving timely, sustainable corrective actions and robust environmental readiness for project milestones.

Responsibilities
  • Lead owner-side environmental compliance across projects, aligning with regulatory requirements and client expectations.
  • Create and maintain a project-specific environmental compliance framework to guide execution.
  • Maintain a strong field presence to verify adherence to plans and permit obligations.
  • Quality-check contractor and CM environmental inspections and documentation for proper cadence and effectiveness.
  • Coach CM/contractor teams on findings and risks, driving corrective actions without direct authority.
  • Identify and prioritize environmental risks and recommend mitigation strategies.
  • Support development and continuous improvement of environmental plans and procedures.
  • Collaborate with client SMEs and permitting resources to stay aligned with permit conditions and reporting.
  • Develop, track, and report environmental performance metrics to leadership.
  • Participate in incident and spill investigations with root cause analysis and preventive actions.
  • Coordinate waste handling, profiling, storage, and disposal with waste vendors and site teams.
  • Support chemical inventory management and regulatory reporting with clear ownership.
  • Serve as a primary contact for practical environmental questions related to scope changes or site conditions.
  • Support environmental readiness for startup and commissioning by integrating requirements into transition plans.
Key requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, or equivalent experience
  • Minimum 8 years of environmental experience, including large construction or capital projects
  • Experience as an owner-side environmental leader balancing field checks with program oversight
  • Strong knowledge of construction-phase environmental domains (stormwater, spill prevention, waste management, air and dust controls)
  • Hyperscale data center construction experience preferred; large-scale industrial construction also acceptable
  • Familiarity with U.S. environmental requirements across multiple jurisdictions and permit condition implementation
  • Ability to translate environmental requirements into practical execution through others
  • Experience influencing CM/contractor performance without direct authority
  • Strong communication skills with executive-level reporting using metrics and risk insights
  • Experience conducting environmental audits/assessments and ensuring corrective action closure
  • High standards for documentation, data integrity, and compliance reporting
  • Familiarity with environmental management system concepts and continuous improvement (preferred)
