Overview In this Controller role, you will lead accounting operations for a construction-focused business, overseeing the monthly close, internal controls, and reporting to enable sound business decisions. You will partner with operations and executive leadership to monitor project financials, forecast margins, and ensure accurate, timely financial results. You will shape cash management, WIP, and cost data processes while supporting audits and regulatory compliance. This is a hands-on leadership position with a focus on precision, controls, and cross-functional collaboration to drive financial performance.
Responsibilities- Establish and refine accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls to support compliance, accuracy, and efficiency
- Direct the monthly close process including journal entries, reconciliations, and ensuring deadlines are met
- Prepare financial results in accordance with corporate standards and reporting requirements
- Lead construction accounting activities: WIP reporting, revenue recognition, job costing, and percentage-of-completion forecasting
- Collaborate with project managers and operations leaders to validate cost data, improve forecast reliability, and address margin concerns
- Manage cash flow through monitoring receipts, disbursements, and collections to maintain liquidity
- Coordinate external audit support and respond to audit requests related to tax, insurance, projects, benefits, and sales tax
- Supervise core finance functions: AR, AP, GL, job costing, contract administration, and fixed asset accounting
- Provide monthly performance analysis via dashboards highlighting profitability, labor productivity, expense trends, cash conversion, and operational improvements
- Support budgeting, forecasting, ad hoc analysis, and effective use of Sage and related tools to enhance reporting quality and data integrity
Key requirements- Experience as a Controller or equivalent in a construction-focused setting
- Strong project-based accounting knowledge (WIP, %, completed contract)
- Proficiency in cash management and budgeting/forecasting
- Ability to partner with operations and executive leadership
- Familiarity with audit coordination and regulatory reporting
- Knowledge of Sage and related accounting tools
