Overview In this role you will lead SALT engagements for a regional CPA firm, specializing in California state and local tax. You will drive client service, technical review, and profitable growth while mentoring staff and steering practice development. The position blends deep technical advisory work with leadership responsibilities across recruitment, training, and quality control. You will work in a hybrid setup from multiple California offices, contributing to the firm's mission through strategic tax guidance and cross-functional collaboration.

Responsibilities- Perform technical tax review and approval of income, sales, franchise, and gross receipts tax returns and examinations
- Advise clients independently with advanced technical skills and ensure timely, budget-aligned deliverables
- Drive business development for SALT projects and participate in ongoing practice growth
- Delegate and manage tax research projects to produce accurate, efficient outputs
- Oversee personnel function related to acquiring, training, retention, and utilization of accounting staff
- Recruit, interview, and extend offers; evaluate staff for promotions and salary adjustments
- Represent clients before tax authorities; manage examinations and staff assignments
- Contribute to staff development, training materials, and professional development programs
- Ensure accurate billing and collections; align with firm philosophy and tax opinions
- Support firm quality control updates and participate in practice development and governance committees
- Maintain relationships with federal tax partners/directors/managers and promote efficient operations and compliance
Key requirements- Ten to fifteen years of public accounting experience with increasing engagement complexity
- Bachelor's degree in accounting (Master preferred)
- CPA or JD required
- Strong knowledge of SALT, California taxes, and related state/local tax regulations
- Experience with client management, profitability awareness, and staff performance evaluations
- Active involvement in recruiting and talent development
- Commitment to continuing professional education (minimum 40 hours annually)
