Organization Overview
Fairbanks Rescue Mission is a Christ-centered, faith-based nonprofit organization dedicated to demonstrating the love of Jesus Christ by providing shelter, hope, and transformational services to individuals and families experiencing homelessness. For over 75 years, we have served Interior Alaska by operating the region's only year-round emergency shelter while providing meals, case management, residential recovery support, and pathways toward stability. Position Summary
The Receptionist serves as the first point of contact for guests, visitors, volunteers, donors, community partners, and callers to the Fairbanks Rescue Mission. This position is responsible for creating a welcoming, respectful, and professional environment while supporting the Mission's commitment to serving individuals experiencing homelessness with compassion, dignity, and Christ-like hospitality. The Receptionist performs a variety of administrative and clerical duties to ensure the efficient operation of the front office and supports communication throughout the organization.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Greet all guests, visitors, volunteers, donors, and community partners in a courteous, professional, and compassionate manner.
- Answer and direct incoming telephone calls, providing accurate information or routing calls to the appropriate department.
- Monitor the front reception area and maintain a safe, organized, and welcoming environment.
- Receive and distribute mail, packages, and deliveries.
- Assist guests with general inquiries regarding Mission services, directing them to the appropriate staff member or program.
- Schedule appointments and maintain calendars as assigned.
- Perform data entry, filing, scanning, copying, and document management.
- Maintain accurate records and administrative files.
- Prepare correspondence, reports, forms, and other documents as requested.
- Order, receive, and maintain office supply inventory.
- Assist with volunteer sign-in, visitor registration, and general office coordination.
- Maintain confidentiality of guest, donor, employee, and organizational information.
- Support fundraising events, community outreach activities, and administrative projects as assigned.
- Assist with maintaining the appearance and organization of the reception and administrative areas.
- Work cooperatively with all departments to ensure efficient communication and operations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of one year of customer service, receptionist, or administrative experience preferred.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and general office equipment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational, multitasking, and time management skills.
- Ability to remain calm, professional, and compassionate when interacting with individuals experiencing crisis or homelessness.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
- Reliable attendance and punctuality.
Preferred
- Experience working in a nonprofit, social services, ministry, healthcare, or human services environment.
- Knowledge of local community resources and social service agencies.
- Experience using office management or donor management software.

Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit, stand, and walk throughout the workday.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds occasionally.
- Frequent use of computers, telephones, printers, and other office equipment.
- Ability to communicate effectively in person and by telephone.
Work Environment
This position works primarily in an active shelter and administrative office environment. Daily interaction with guests experiencing homelessness, volunteers, donors, community partners, employees, and the general public should be expected. The position requires flexibility, professionalism, and the ability to respond appropriately to changing situations while maintaining a welcoming atmosphere.
