Director of Underwriting Performance, Marine

Overview

In this role you lead the Marine underwriting performance for the Specialty division, shaping strategy across assigned territories and collaborating with branch partners. You mentor underwriters, optimize use of tools, and drive profitable new and renewal business. You will align enterprise goals with regional growth, manage technical underwriting, and advance a high-performing, cross-functional team. This role offers impact through strategic leadership, industry knowledge, and hands-on development of underwriting capabilities on the East Coast.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement strategies based on priorities and underwriting results
  • Identify cross-sell opportunities to grow other lines and customer segments
  • Collaborate with Specialty distribution and local branch partners
  • Partner with leadership to drive regional business strategy
  • Decipher complex accounts and apply underwriting principles for team communication
  • Identify training needs and conduct training sessions
  • Manage UW account referrals to meet productivity targets
  • Assess underwriter skills and delegate authority accordingly
  • Assist in developing strategic financial plans and profitability targets
  • Drive profit improvement while ensuring optimal use of tools and resources
  • Stay current on regulations and trends to drive state results
  • Oversee renewal process guidelines and workflows for efficient renewal book management
  • Provide leadership to build and sustain a high-performing workforce
  • Travel as needed
Key requirements
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • 10+ years of Specialty/Marine experience
  • Proven experience driving agency relationships resulting in profitable new business and renewals
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to collaborate and influence across levels of the organization
  • Strong problem-solving and ownership mindset
