Technical Director - Biological Resources

Overview

As Technical Director, you will lead wildlife biology, botany and wetland teams to deliver field studies, assessments and regulatory documentation. You will drive environmental compliance with CEQA and NEPA, and shape project strategy across California. The role combines leadership, business development and client relationship management to grow our natural resources practice. You'll mentor staff, oversee complex projects, and collaborate with engineers and environmental professionals in a hybrid work setting. Responsibilities
  • Lead teams of wildlife biologists, botanists and wetland scientists to complete field studies and complex biological reports.
  • Coordinate with engineers to develop CEQA/NEPA documentation and pursue regulatory approvals.
  • Ensure adherence to HSE policies within the area of responsibility.
  • Manage a portfolio of major projects aligned with the project management strategy.
  • Maintain key client relationships and support account teams to drive satisfaction.
  • Assess staff capabilities, implement development plans, and mentor talent.
  • Develop and monitor performance objectives for the team and individuals.
  • Create innovative solutions by analyzing diverse information sources.
  • Lead the preparation of tenders and proposals for complex bids.
  • Act as subject matter expert and maintain external accreditations through ongoing professional development.
  • Contribute to communities of practice and thought leadership in defined areas of expertise.
Key requirements
  • 20+ years in roles with most of the responsibilities listed above
  • 10+ years in environmental consulting, including 6+ years of full cycle project management
  • 10+ years of field experience in natural resources surveys and assessments (special status species) and related California biological resources expertise
  • Comprehensive knowledge of CEQA, NEPA, and state/federal regulations; experience in environmental documentation, permitting, mitigation, and compliance
  • Significant experience in winning work: positioning, pipeline development, pursuits and client relationship management
