Overview As an Electrical / I&C Design Engineer in HDR's Power team, you contribute to the design and execution of electrical systems for power plants, including hydro, fossil, and renewables. You'll lead design work, coordinate with disciplines, and ensure code-compliant solutions for generation facilities. You'll work with senior engineers to deliver detailed packages, calculations, and control-system interfaces that support reliable, sustainable power. This role offers a hands-on opportunity to shape how electricity is generated and delivered at scale, within a collaborative, employee-owned culture.
Responsibilities- Lead design team through schematic design to contract documents
- Coordinate meetings with governing agencies for code compliance
- Manage workload to meet delivery schedules
- Conduct on-site work sessions with Project Manager and other disciplines
- Prepare detailed design packages for generation and storage facilities
- Produce engineering calculations (load flow, short circuit, grounding, arc flash)
- Oversee plant equipment specifications (generators, transformers, switchgear, MCCs, PLC/DCS)
- Coordinate electrical design with HDR disciplines and project personnel
- Perform cable sizing, raceway calculations, and routing drawings
- Develop I/O lists and interface with plant control system
- Create testing and commissioning plans
- Review and provide status updates on deliverables
- Maintain relationships with clients, vendors, and sub-consultants
- Identify and develop new strategic relationships to win and execute projects in Power Generation
Key requirements- Bachelor in Engineering
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or equivalent
- 7+ years of project execution experience in the Power Market Sector
- Experience in hydroelectric, fossil, and renewable power generation design
- Knowledge of medium/low voltage switchgear and motor control centers, diesel generators, UPS, VFDs, PLCs, Excitation and Governor Systems
- Experience with detailed design for large power generation projects is highly desirable
- Prior consulting engineering experience is desirable
- Proficiency with design software: ETAP, SKM, and/or CDEGS
- Ability to produce electrical design drawings (one-lines, schematics, general arrangements, BOMs)
- Strong communication skills and travel flexibility
- Microsoft Office proficiency and plant design tools (PLS CAD, AutoCAD, Plant 3D, AutoPipe, Revit)
