Overview In this role you will help design and develop high voltage substations, focusing on physical layouts and protection and control systems. You'll collaborate with the Power Delivery Substation Team to support projects from due diligence through construction, delivering safe, compliant, and scalable substation solutions. You'll work on diverse contexts including utilities, transportation, and government sectors, applying standards and practical engineering to meet client objectives. This position offers mentorship and cross functional collaboration, with a focus on enabling reliable power delivery and future-ready designs. Responsibilities- Provide technical guidance for design, development, and construction of high voltage substations (15kV-345kV, up to 500kV preferred) focusing on physical layouts or protection and control systems
- Review data, equipment specifications, and procurement packages; apply IFR/IRC design review and IEEE/NESC/NERC standards
- Develop substation electrical designs (GA, bus, grounding, lighting) and/or P&C schematics and wiring diagrams
- Incorporate future-ready design considerations, equipment sizing, cabling, panel design, and conduit/trenching strategies
- Support senior engineers with component selection and field equipment analysis
- Perform electrical calculations (loads, sizing, voltage drop, grounding, circuits) and prepare data visualizations and reports
- Maintain quality control for measurements, statistics, and reporting
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure compliance with specifications, permits, and regulatory documentation
- Assist in scoping and delivering small- to medium-sized projects; contribute to technical reports and presentations
- Conduct engineering studies and field investigations; participate in HASP development and safety planning
- Engage with regulators and stakeholders on Federal, State, and local projects; uphold company policies and ethics
- Travel as project requirements dictate
Key requirements- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering
- 3-5 years of relevant post degree experience in electrical engineering for power transmission/distribution
- Engineer in Training Certification
- Experience with infrastructure planning, design, and construction management
- Knowledge of electrical engineering principles, design/build, and permitting processes
- Ability to coordinate with regulators and understand regulatory requirements
- Proficiency in technical writing and data analysis; strong communication skills
- Experience with design software (CADD, Aspen, CAPE, ETAP; AutoCADD electrical)
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities; safety-conscious
- Occasional travel may be required
