Overview

As a Senior Manufacturing Controls Engineer, you will lead the design, integration, and commissioning of automated manufacturing systems to support GM's global operations. You'll provide technical direction across programs, plant launches, and upgrades, collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver safe, reliable, and high-performing controls solutions. You will oversee hardware/software design, testing, supplier engagement, and production validation to enable scalable automation. This role offers hands-on impact on expanding GM's automated capabilities and standards. You will work in a global, safety driven environment with opportunities to advance automation technology.

Responsibilities
  • Lead controls engineering execution from concept to production launch
  • Design, review, and approve controls hardware/software (PLCs, HMIs, drives, safety systems, networks)
  • Program, troubleshoot, integrate, and validate automated equipment
  • Apply GM Global Common Controls standards (hardware, software, safety, cybersecurity)
  • Oversee emulation, offline testing, supplier buyoffs, installations, and commissioning
  • Provide technical direction to engineers, suppliers, and plant personnel
  • Manage project scope, timing, risks, deliverables, and escalations
  • Collaborate with equipment suppliers to define requirements and ensure GM standard compliance
  • Support plant launches, ramp-up, downtime recovery, and complex controls troubleshooting
  • Conduct root-cause analysis and implement corrective actions for safety, quality, uptime
  • Participate in investment studies, design reviews, and technical sourcing
  • Develop and maintain standardized controls templates, tools, and documentation
  • Capture lessons learned and improve standards and processes
  • Collaborate with global teams on technology development and deployment
  • Promote safety, inclusion, accountability, and continuous improvement
Key requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field
  • Five+ years in manufacturing controls, automation, or related discipline
  • Experience designing, programming, integrating, and commissioning automated equipment
  • Strong experience with PLCs, HMIs, drives, safety controls, networks, and electrical systems
  • Ability to read electrical schematics, panel layouts, drawings, and equipment specs
  • Experience executing projects and managing equipment suppliers
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, organizational, and decision-making skills
  • Ability to work independently and lead cross-functional teams
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally including extended assignments and off-shift support
