Overview

In this role, you will design and validate next gen robotic laparoscopic instruments, advancing miniaturized, reliable mechanical systems for surgery. You'll work within a cross functional engineering team to create reusable and disposable instruments, perform analyses, and develop test fixtures for production readiness. The position blends design, analysis, prototyping, and DFMEA within FDA regulated product development, aiming to improve precision and patient outcomes. This is a hands on opportunity to shape the future of robotic surgery at a global leader. You'll collaborate closely with suppliers and internal teams to drive robust, manufacturable solutions that scale.

Responsibilities
  • Design, develop and document components and assemblies for novel robotic laparoscopic energy instruments
  • Miniaturize existing architectures to meet clinical needs
  • Analyze problems and validate designs through empirical testing
  • Create architectures for next-gen reusable and disposable instruments
  • Model and validate electro-mechanical systems using simulations and theoretical analysis
  • Develop mechanical parts with attention to materials, kinematics, and stress
  • Create testing fixtures for verification/validation of production components
  • Collaborate with suppliers to optimize DFM for high-volume manufacturing
  • Prepare product specifications and perform DFMEA on parts
  • Work in multidisciplinary teams to define requirements for new/current designs
  • Develop automated tests and scripts (e.g., MATLAB) to evaluate designs
  • Prepare Design History Files per FDA requirements and support New Product Introduction
  • Investigate root causes of design/manufacturing defects
  • Assess field reliability data to improve designs
  • Provide sustaining mechanical engineering support for manufacturing issues
  • Conduct technical design reviews
Key requirements
  • Strong analytical aptitude with theoretical fundamentals
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD (SolidWorks preferred) and MATLAB; FEA tools (Ansys/Pro Mechanica)
  • Excellent prototyping skills and fast iteration
  • MATLAB programming for interfacing with electromechanical assemblies
  • Experience across all product lifecycle phases (design through transfer)
  • Machining and high-volume injection molding experience a plus
  • Comfort analyzing electrical assemblies and sensors
  • Strong communication and documentation skills
  • Willingness to operate machine shop equipment
  • Solid understanding of design for reliability and manufacturability
  • Experience in medical devices preferred
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical thinking
