Overview

In this role you lead editorial and publication efforts for a federal client's research communications, ensuring accuracy, accessibility, and publication readiness across technical materials. You direct editorial staff, manage workflows, and shepherd content from concept to final publication for print and digital formats. You collaborate with researchers, engineers, and stakeholders to deliver clear, authoritative publications. You will champion quality, standards, and timely delivery in a fast-paced government environment, shaping how complex findings are communicated.

Responsibilities
  • Lead editorial review, QA, and publication management for technical reports, newsletters, magazines, websites, and other materials
  • Oversee end-to-end editorial process for high-visibility publications across large programs
  • Supervise editors, writers, and publication staff, providing guidance
  • Perform substantive editing, copyediting, proofreading, rewriting, formatting, and fact-checking
  • Verify technical accuracy, citations, copyrights, and permissions
  • Translate complex technical content into clear publications for diverse audiences
  • Ensure compliance with GPO Style Manual, Chicago Manual of Style, Section 508, and agency guidance
  • Manage publication intake, schedules, workflows, reviews, approvals, version control, and dissemination
  • Coordinate with researchers, engineers, legal reviewers, public affairs, and stakeholders
  • Direct quality control reviews to meet agency standards before publication
  • Support publishing across print, digital, and web platforms from development to distribution
  • Work independently while juggling multiple publications in a fast-paced federal environment
Key requirements
  • Active Public Trust or suitability preferred (ability to obtain/maintain)
  • US Citizenship
  • Master in English, Journalism, or a technical field
  • 10+ years of technical editing, publishing, or editorial experience
  • Supervisory and project management experience
  • Experience mentoring editors and writers
  • Expert knowledge of the GPO Style Manual
  • Knowledge of federal publishing requirements
  • Experience managing publication workflows and full lifecycle of technical documents
  • Experience substantive editing, copyediting, proofreading, rewriting, and fact-checking
  • Experience verifying citations, references, and copyright compliance
  • Experience supporting Section 508-compliant publications and digital content
  • Strong QA, document management, and version-control skills
  • Experience coordinating reviews among multiple stakeholders
  • Willingness to work on-site in Washington, DC and in Arlington/Tysons Corner, VA
