Overview

As a Senior Lighting Designer at SmithGroup you will lead lighting strategy across projects and guide the design vision from concept to completion. You will collaborate with clients, contractors, and internal teams to develop compelling lighting solutions that meet performance, budget, and schedule goals. The role emphasizes leadership, technical excellence, and cross-disciplinary coordination to deliver resilient, high-quality spaces. This position offers scope to shape design outcomes and mentor a team while representing SmithGroup at events and client meetings.

Responsibilities
  • Lead lighting design efforts through all project stages and engage with clients and project teams
  • Perform analysis, documentation, and presentations for large or complex lighting systems
  • Conduct quality control and on-site observations to support punch lists
  • Manage project scope, fees, and staffing; serve as Principal-in-Charge for client leadership and satisfaction
  • Oversee multiple project teams and coordinate with interdisciplinary groups
  • Support marketing through proposals and interviews; build trusted client relationships
  • Mentor and coach project teams; participate in recruitment and performance coaching
  • Represent knowledge sharing and contribute to professional engagements and associations
Key requirements
  • 10+ years of lighting design experience with leadership and mentorship capabilities
  • IALD Professional Membership and Certified Lighting Designer (CLD) Certification
  • Strong client, team, and business development abilities
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Solid understanding of construction documents, project administration, and interdisciplinary coordination
  • Proficiency in lighting design and documentation tools (CAD, 3ds Max, Grasshopper, Revit, Adobe, Microsoft Office)
