Principal Consultant, Planning Engineer / Transportation

Overview

In this role you lead transportation planning for major capital projects, shaping strategies that advance sustainable infrastructure. You will work within ERM's transportation practice to deliver compliant, high-impact analyses for projects worldwide and mentor others to strengthen the team. You'll influence proposals, methodologies, and technical direction while expanding capabilities through client engagement and thought leadership. This is a high-visibility position with global scope and a clear focus on delivering sustainable, commercially viable outcomes.

Responsibilities
  • Lead multimodal transportation impact assessments for construction and operations
  • Develop methodologies aligned with NEPA, FHWA/FTA guidance, and local/international standards
  • Contribute to proposal development by defining scope and approach for transportation components
  • Build and nurture client relationships while pursuing new transportation planning opportunities
  • Mentor junior team members and foster an inclusive, high-performing culture
  • Occasional travel for client meetings and field reviews across project locations
Key requirements
  • 6+ years of progressive experience in transportation planning/engineering for major capital projects (10+ years preferred)
  • Strong expertise in U.S. transportation standards and frameworks (NEPA, FHWA/FTA, HCM, MUTCD) and state/local requirements
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to translate technical concepts for clients and stakeholders
  • Authorization to work in the U.S.
