Principal Engineer, Autonomy Developer Productivity

Overview

In this role you will lead the AV Developer Productivity team to build and improve the tools engineers rely on to develop autonomous driving capabilities. You'll shape the observability stack and tooling, partnering with cross-functional teams to boost engineering efficiency and reliability. You'll evaluate new technologies through PoCs, drive best practices, and mentor engineers to grow technical excellence. This position offers impact at scale in a mission-driven organization.

Responsibilities
  • Contribute code, perform reviews, and craft designs to improve observability system performance and reliability.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to enhance engineering workflows via observability enhancements.
  • Partner with Software Engineering teams to understand use-cases and guide tool adoption.
  • Build tools to collect and act on observability signals from distributed cloud systems and on-vehicle sensors.
  • Influence the technical roadmap through PoCs and strategic tool investments.
  • Promote software engineering best practices within the team and across GM's AV organization.
  • Guide trade-offs between delivering impact and technical debt, and mentor junior engineers.
Key requirements
  • 10+ years of experience or proven track record coordinating across multiple teams and leadership levels
  • Bachelor in Computer Science or related field OR equivalent work experience
  • Experience driving consensus in multi-functional efforts using influence
  • Experience designing and implementing large-scale systems
  • Strong experience with container orchestration systems (Kubernetes)
  • Proficiency in one or more high-level languages such as Go, Python, Rust, C/C++, NodeJS
  • Solid Unix/Linux, SSH, and networking fundamentals
  • Effective collaboration, communication, and feedback skills
  • Experience mentoring and growing junior engineers
