Principal Mechanical Design Engineer

Overview

In this role you will design and deliver mechanical solutions for FormFactor's advanced semiconductor test equipment. You'll work across engineering, manufacturing, and R&D to create manufacturable, reliable designs and validate them through prototyping and analysis. You will contribute to probe-card related projects and support continuous improvement of design templates and processes. This is a hands-on, cross-functional role focused on scalable, high-quality mechanical solutions that enable performance and yield improvements.

Responsibilities
  • Create and release detailed mechanical designs for precision components and assemblies
  • Build, inspect, assemble, and troubleshoot prototype hardware during development and release
  • Participate in root-cause analysis and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Use 3D CAD to make models, layouts, drawings, and BOMs for manufacturable designs
  • Perform engineering analysis including tolerance studies and basic finite element analysis
  • Translate requirements into robust mechanical design solutions
  • Support probe card mechanical design and architecture development through design, prototype, and production release
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, quality, process, and R&D to resolve field issues
  • Evaluate design feasibility, manufacturability, reliability, cost, and scalability
  • Maintain and improve design templates, documentation standards, and workflows
  • Translate analytical results into design improvements and actionable recommendations
Key requirements
  • Strong proficiency with 3D CAD modeling, drawings, assemblies, and documentation
  • Working knowledge of GD&T, tolerance analysis, design for manufacturability, and mechanical assembly practices
  • Hands-on lab/prototype/build/inspection experience
  • Experience supporting design reviews, validation, troubleshooting, and cross-functional problem solving
  • Clear communication and cross-functional coordination skills
  • Knowledge of inspection methods, metrology, mechanical testing, and prototype validation
