Staff Battery Engineer

Overview

As a Battery Engineer at Sila, you advance electrode and cell concepts from prototype to commercial products. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to design experiments, analyze data, and scale up processes for mass production. Your role focuses on delivering safe, high-performance lithium ion cells and integrating learnings across form factors. You'll drive rapid learning, use data-driven methods, and help align partners to meet customer programs. This is a hands-on, impact-focused role at the intersection of R&D and manufacturing.

Responsibilities
  • Advance electrode and cell products from prototype to NPI to commercialization
  • Scale up electrodes using prototype lines; design and execute comprehensive experiments in multilayer pouch full cells to validate performance and safety
  • Collaborate with contract manufacturers to transfer technology to mass production of electrodes/cells
  • Translate learnings to other cell form factors through modeling and practical considerations
  • Drive cross-functional technical alignment among internal teams and external partners/customers
  • Establish and drive failure analysis to identify root causes in various cell stages
  • Apply data analysis, statistics, and modeling to interpret test results and guide design iterations
  • Develop new testing methods to accelerate learning and detect downstream challenges early
  • Champion company values and contribute to vision while growing the organization
Key requirements
  • Experience with pilot-scale electrode scale-up and cell design
  • Strong background in lithium-ion battery processes (slurry, coating, cell design, teardown)
  • Excellent communication with internal and external stakeholders; language skills a plus
  • Proficiency with databases and data analysis tools such as JMP and Python
  • Ability to plan and manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Structured, data-driven approach to experimental design and problem solving
  • Knowledge of lab safety practices
  • Bachelor in Engineering or Science with 7+ years in batteries (less with advanced degree)
