Overview In this role you will independently manage end-to-end payroll tax case work, resolving notices and errors across multiple states. You'll mentor peers while handling high-volume workloads and driving process improvements. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure accurate filings, timely amendments, and compliant tax payments. Your work directly supports customers by delivering precise tax resolutions and continuous service excellence.

Responsibilities- Process full-cycle payroll tax cases for assigned accounts, including tax filings and payments across jurisdictions
- Research and resolve complex state and federal notices independently from intake to closure
- Prepare agency responses with documentation and submit within deadlines
- Prepare and own amended payroll tax returns (Form 941-X and state equivalents) for complex cases
- Support payroll correction workflows by identifying root causes and documenting audit trails
- Maintain disciplined personal WIP queue, prioritize by SLA, and ensure thorough case documentation
- Perform high-level trend analysis to identify process or system deficiencies
- Contribute to SOP/KB updates and flag outdated content or solutions
- Collaborate with Corrections, Amendments, Pay & File, and Tax Notice teams; mentor TP1 staff and seek coaching
Key requirements- 2-3+ years in payroll tax with focus on notice resolution, amended returns, and error correction across multiple states
- Working knowledge of IRS/state notice types and ability to select resolution path
- Experience resolving notices independently (balance-due, penalties, SUI rate changes, deposit mismatches)
- Knowledge of tax payment and filing regulations; understanding of employee vs employer tax responsibilities
- Hands-on experience preparing/amending Federal (Form 941-X, W-2c) and State payroll tax returns (including complex local jurisdictions)
- Deep knowledge of federal payroll tax law (FICA, FUTA, FITW, deposits, penalties)
- Multi-state payroll tax expertise (reciprocity, resident/nonresident taxation, SUI, local compliance)
- Proficiency with at least one payroll platform and Salesforce for case management
- Excel/Google Sheets skills (VLOOKUP, pivot, reconciliation)
- Strong written/verbal communication with agencies; clear case documentation
- Bachelor's or Associate in Accounting/Business/Finance preferred; equivalent experience
- FPC required; CPP preferred for 4+ years; CPP pursued is favorable
- Experience in payroll service bureau/PEO/multi-client environments is a plus
