Senior Director, Environmental Compliance

Overview

In this role, you provide strategic leadership for Veolia Water New Jersey's environmental compliance programs, aligning with corporate goals to advance public health, stewardship, and operational excellence. You'll oversee compliance across air, water, waste, and related areas, coordinating with cross-functional teams to mitigate risks and ensure readiness. You will shape governance, manage audits, and liaise with regulators to balance strict compliance with business needs. This position offers high impact through guiding regulatory strategy and enterprise-wide environmental initiatives.

Responsibilities
  • Provide strategic leadership for VWNJ's environmental compliance programs across federal, state, and local regulations
  • Lead a team of environmental professionals and coordinate with Operations, Engineering, Legal, and Finance
  • Oversee environmental permitting, reporting, and compliance documentation across VWNJ operations
  • Direct environmental auditing, compliance assurance, and corrective action programs
  • Manage interactions with regulators and external stakeholders; represent the organization during inspections and negotiations
  • Develop and implement environmental governance frameworks and compliance management systems
  • Oversee laboratory analysis and third-party laboratory services for compliance demonstrations
  • Support due diligence for capital projects and new business initiatives
  • Monitor regulatory developments and communicate impact to leadership
  • Lead incident investigations and spill response activities; ensure emergency preparedness and response readiness
  • Establish departmental goals, budgets, KPIs, and succession planning
  • Drive continuous improvement in compliance, sustainability, and financial performance
Key requirements
  • 12+ years of progressive environmental compliance experience in a regulated setting
  • 7+ years of leadership experience managing professionals and cross-functional teams
  • Experience leading environment compliance programs across multiple operating locations
  • Experience engaging with federal and state regulatory agencies
  • Experience developing and implementing environmental compliance management systems
  • Experience supporting environmental due diligence, capital projects, and business development preferred
  • Knowledge of drinking water treatment, wastewater operations, hazardous materials management, and environmental risk management
  • Strong analytical, communication, and presentation skills; ability to influence senior leaders
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office/Google applications and environmental compliance systems
  • Bachelor-level degree in a related technical field; Master's preferred
