Overview

As a Substation Project Engineer at HDR, you'll advance high-voltage substation design and execution within a growing Power Delivery team. You will work on yard layouts, grounding, protection and control, and related documentation, coordinating with multiple disciplines. Your role includes mentoring junior EITs/Designers, preparing scopes and budgets, and ensuring schedules are met. The position offers impact at scale, contributing to reliable energy delivery and HDR's collaborative, employee-owned culture. This is a practical, hands-on engineering role with opportunities to lead projects and shape design outcomes.

Responsibilities
  • Support scopes, schedules, and budgets and ensure they are met
  • Understand physical substation design including yard layouts, grounding, lightning protection, control building arrangements, and related BOMs
  • Understand protection and control design including panel arrangements, one/two/three lines, wiring, and relay panels
  • Prepare calculations for studies and reports (grounding, lighting protection, AC/DC load studies)
  • Prepare equipment specifications for procurement and FAT
  • Coordinate design activities with Civil/Structural, Networks, Transmission Line, etc.
  • Communicate and coordinate project activities with manager, clients, and other stakeholders
  • Work independently and mentor/train/supervise less-experienced EITs and Designers
Key requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license
  • Previous project execution experience in the Power Market Sector
  • Minimum 4 years of substation design experience
  • Experience with One Line Diagrams, General Arrangements, Sections, Grounding, Conduit Plans, Foundation Plans, Material Lists, Relay and Control Systems, Control Schematics, and Wiring Diagrams
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and electrical design software (PLS CAD, AutoCAD, Plant 3D, AutoPipe, Revit)
  • Some travel required
  • Experience with substations from 12kV through 500kV; 765kV experience is a plus
  • Experience with architectural/engineering or engineering consulting firms desired
  • Strong communication and coordination abilities
