Virtual Propulsion Engineer-3D Combustion, Airflow, Exhaust

General Motors

Detroit, Michigan

Job description

Overview

In this role, you will advance ICE technology through high-fidelity 3D CFD simulations. You'll work within the Engine Performance and Calibration team to optimize combustion chambers for efficiency, power, and emissions. You will translate analysis into actionable design guidance for engineers and collaborate across design, calibration, controls, and emissions teams. Expect to push prediction fidelity, iterate with experimental data, and stay ahead of new technology in a high-impact, cross-functional environment.

Responsibilities
  • Design and optimize combustion chamber geometries for efficiency, power, and emissions
  • Simulate and interpret combustion, heat transfer, cold-start behavior, and catalyst heating strategies
  • Provide design recommendations to Responsible Engineers based on analysis results
  • Model fuel preparation, equivalence ratio, and wall wetting in analyses
  • Analyze injector behavior, spray atomization, wall interactions, and mixture preparation
  • Perform in-cylinder combustion analysis with 3D CFD codes (Star-CD, Converge, AVL-Fire, or in-house)
  • Improve existing analysis practices to enhance fidelity and speed
  • Present results to engineering peers and management
  • Document objectives, conclusions, and assumptions using standard templates
  • Collaborate with test engineers to enhance lab procedures supporting advanced analysis
  • Stay updated on new technology and competitive products
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (engine design, calibration, controls, emissions)
  • Validate simulations with experimental data and iterate designs accordingly
  • Communicate findings to technical leadership and stakeholders
Key requirements
  • 5+ years of compressible CFD analysis related to powertrain systems
  • Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or related field with focus on ICE or fluid dynamics
  • 3+ years CFD software experience (CONVERGE, STAR-CD, STAR-CCM+ ICS or similar) for gasoline/diesel simulations
  • Proficiency with ProStar, ICEM, HyperMesh, Tgrid or equivalent CFD meshing tools
  • Proficiency with Converge, Siemens CCM+ In-Cylinder Solution, StarCD, AVL Fire or equivalent
  • Proficiency with Ensight, ProStar or equivalent CFD post-processing tools
  • Cross-functional collaboration
  • Strong communication and presentation of complex results
  • Analytical mindset with attention to detail
  • 3D CFD for powertrain (Star-CD, Converge, AVL-Fire, ICS)
  • CFD meshing (ProStar, ICEM, HyperMesh, Tgrid)
  • CFD post-processing (Ensight)
