Substation Lead Specialist Electrical Designer

Overview

In this role, you will provide technical design and CADD support for substation projects within WSP's Power & Energy Substation Team. You will guide multi-site design efforts, produce deliverables, and ensure alignment with industry standards and codes. You'll collaborate with engineers, lead drafting activities, and influence project outcomes through precise, compliant designs. This opportunity offers on-site, hybrid, or remote work depending on location and business needs, with a focus on solving complex electrical infrastructure challenges. Responsibilities
  • Oversee and generate CADD designs for multi-site/substation projects of varying scale and complexity
  • Collect, analyze data from sites and specifications to support drafting and design activities
  • Utilize 3D CADD software and collaborate with engineers to refine design details
  • Ensure plans comply with codes, standards, and project specifications
  • Act as a design consultant on progress, quality, and issue resolution; may lead drafting/design staff
  • Monitor accuracy of calculations, design changes, and contract interpretation; escalate as needed
  • Prepare multiple design versions for review and coordinate with engineers and clients
  • Provide guidance and training to entry-level drafting staff and stay current with practices
  • Collaborate cross-functionally on project phases and checks; participate in meetings as needed
  • Maintain safety, ethics, and compliance with company policies and code of conduct
Key requirements
  • High School Diploma
  • 11+ years of relevant post-education experience in drafting/design support
  • Advanced knowledge of drafting/design principles and techniques
  • Advanced knowledge of codes, regulations, and record-keeping requirements
  • Strong geometry and mathematical computation abilities for design accuracy
  • Analytical mindset and sound judgment
  • Excellent interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills
  • Self-leadership, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities
  • Proficiency in technical writing, office software, and design tools
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities to apply technical knowledge
  • Commitment to workplace safety and familiarity with health and safety policies
  • Ability to travel occasionally and meet project-specific schedules
  • Preferred: Bachelor's Degree in a related discipline; essential licensure/certification
