Senior Explosive Safety Specialist

Overview

In this role you will lead explosive safety and energetic operations for ammunition, explosives, and warheads, guiding field and deployment activities domestically and internationally. You will collaborate with engineering, flight operations, and safety teams to ensure safe testing, demonstrations, and deployments. The position combines technical expertise with operational leadership across live-fire, range, and regulatory environments. You will contribute to mission critical defense initiatives by shaping deployment plans, safety reviews, and process improvements.

Responsibilities
  • Apply explosive safety requirements across handling, transport, storage, integration, testing, and use of munitions and energetic materials
  • Independently support and oversee complex explosive and energetic operations
  • Identify hazards and develop risk controls for field, test, and storage activities
  • Provide explosive safety guidance to engineering, testing, manufacturing, and field teams
  • Support ammunition handling, inventory accountability, magazine management, and storage operations
  • Assist warhead, munition, fuze, and energetic component installation and integration
  • Support ESADs, fuzing systems, initiation systems, and safety-critical energetic components
  • Plan and execute logistics for field operations, live-fire tests, demonstrations, and deployments
  • Develop deployment plans covering personnel, equipment, transportation, facilities, schedules, site access, and vendors
  • Lead pre-deployment readiness activities and ensure all resources are in place
  • Coordinate mobilization, field execution, demobilization, equipment recovery, and closeout
  • Develop deployment checklists, manifests, movement plans, schedules, and documentation
  • Anticipate constraints and develop mitigation/contingency plans
  • Resolve field logistics issues with limited supervision
  • Coordinate vendors, transportation providers, facilities, procurement, and external resources
  • Lead or support post-deployment reviews and capture lessons learned
  • Provide explosive safety support for live-fire ranges and energetic testing
  • Coordinate range preparation, access, resources, accountability, and post-test reconciliation
  • Work with range personnel, engineers, and flight/test teams to enable safe field activities
  • Support handling of unexploded or damaged energetic test articles
  • Support domestic and international movement of energetic materials and test hardware
  • Maintain awareness of hazardous materials, ITAR, EAR, customs, and international transport
  • Identify activities requiring regulatory review and coordinate with subject matter experts
  • Support shipping, inventory, customs, and equipment movement documentation
  • Maintain knowledge of aviation terminology, range operations, airspace, and UAS flight-test requirements
  • Support range scheduling, site coordination, NOTAMs, and documentation
  • Coordinate FAA/airspace regulatory support as needed
  • Assist with explosive hazard classification and disposal
  • Coordinate demilitarization and disposition with internal/external orgs
  • Maintain accountability and disposition documentation
  • Support preparation for weapon/fuze safety reviews
  • Assist with engagement with service/regulatory review authorities (WSESRB, NNMSB, AWSSRB, AFSRB)
  • Help develop and improve procedures, checklists, and standard work
  • Provide guidance to less experienced personnel
  • Identify recurring constraints and recommend process or infrastructure improvements
Key requirements
  • Significant experience in EOD, explosive safety, ammunition and explosives operations, or related discipline
  • Demonstrated knowledge of explosive safety principles and energetic operations
  • Experience supporting live-fire ranges, explosive testing, or ordnance operations
  • Proven ability to independently plan and execute field operations and deployments
  • Experience coordinating personnel, equipment, transportation, schedules, facilities, and resources
  • Ability to integrate explosive safety requirements into deployment planning
  • Experience with ammunition storage, explosive magazines, and inventory accountability
  • Ability to identify operational, logistical, and regulatory risks and know when to engage specialists
  • Strong technical writing, planning, communication, and documentation skills
  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally for field activities
  • Graduate of military EOD school or equivalent training (preferred)
  • Experience with ESADs, fuzes, or safety-critical initiation systems (preferred)
  • UAS/FAA regulatory familiarity and Part 107 or related experience (preferred)
  • Active or previous U.S. security clearance (required or preferred)
  • ITAR/EAR, Dangerous Goods, and international shipping familiarity (preferred)
