Overview As Staff Materials Engineer, you will lead material technology initiatives for the Oura product line, focusing on metals, surface treatments, and inorganic coatings to enhance performance and reliability. You will guide R&D, set a materials roadmap, and ensure scalable, biocompatible manufacturing. You'll partner with product, design, and operations to embed materials solutions early in development. You'll drive testing, qualification, and collaboration with vendors to deliver high-quality, durable hardware that delights users.

Responsibilities- Manage the materials engineering roadmap across metals, surface treatments, PVD/CVD, platings and emerging technologies
- Lead R&D and material selection for current and next-gen products balancing form, performance, biocompatibility, manufacturability, and sustainability
- Establish and optimize material and bonding processes for high-volume manufacturing
- Collaborate with PD, ID, and Ops to integrate materials solutions early in product development
- Define standardized materials testing and coupons for characterizing materials
- Work with external vendors and partners to evaluate materials, qualify processes, and ensure scalability
- Define and oversee materials validation, characterization, and reliability testing methodologies
- Collaborate with Reliability and Regulatory teams to ensure material compliance and real-world performance
- Identify and mitigate material risks across the product lifecycle
Key requirements- Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field
- 10+ years of experience in materials engineering of metals, PVD/CVD, metal surface treatments and plating
- Experience developing materials and processes for consumer electronics, medical devices, or wearables
- Strong background in materials characterization, surface chemistry, and process development
- Strong global connections with contract manufacturers and materials suppliers across Asia and globally
