Overview

As a Senior Mechanical Controls Engineer, you will design control systems for buildings across sectors, from schematics to construction administration. You will lead cross-regional project teams, ensure design quality, and manage execution within budget and schedule. You'll collaborate with architects and engineers in an integrated design process and guide colleagues in controls standards. Your work supports sustainable, high-performance facilities and client satisfaction, with a clear impact on project outcomes. This role offers visibility across projects and the opportunity to shape building automation and systems integration at scale.

Responsibilities
  • Lead multiple projects and staff across regions to ensure design criteria are understood and teams are trained on controls design.
  • Assure quality of design through multiple touchpoints across projects.
  • Manage project execution (budget, schedule, scope) while meeting client expectations.
  • Track milestones and deliverables; prepare regular status reports.
  • Facilitate and document meetings with staff and clients; coordinate personnel, vendors, and consultants.
  • Contribute to business development via RFP responses, client interviews, and relationship-building.
  • Lead design of building automation, smoke control, and electrical system controls.
  • Collaborate with architects, other engineers, and clients within an integrated design process.
  • Carry out technical reviews of interdisciplinary teams prior to issuance.
  • Represent DLR Group in meetings with owners, clients, and suppliers.
  • Mentor emerging engineers and help develop firm-wide controls standards.
Key requirements
  • 7+ years of experience writing controls specifications, creating controls diagrams, and writing sequences of operations.
  • Familiarity with facility operations and maintenance of building systems.
  • Knowledge of design and construction processes and ability to communicate with other disciplines.
  • Strong critical thinking, time management, and verbal/written communication skills.
  • Understanding of business management and customer service principles.
  • Knowledge of building and energy codes.
  • Demonstrated record of consistent quality work.
  • Ability to lead others and foster teamwork.
  • Knowledge and support of DLR Group's climate action strategy and commitments (AIA2030, ME2040, SE2050).
