Overview As Director of Software Applications Engineering, you lead the teams building cloud-native applications, APIs, and data services that power our cloud networking platform. You own the technical roadmap and delivery quality for above-network-layer services, partnering with product, platform, and customer-facing teams to ship reliable, scalable software at cloud scale. You blend hands-on technical leadership with people management and cross-functional influence. Responsibilities- Own strategy, architecture, and execution roadmap for cloud applications, APIs, and middleware/data services
- Lead and develop multiple engineering teams with clear goals and career paths
- Translate business/customer requirements into a prioritized technical roadmap with Product Management
- Drive engineering excellence across CI/CD, test automation, observability, and SSDLC
- Ensure scalability, availability, and performance in multi-tenant, multi-region cloud environments
- Collaborate with Platform Engineering, SRE, Security, and Support on incidents and SLOs
- Evolve middleware/data-services architecture (APIs, messaging, event streaming, data pipelines) for new capabilities
- Manage departmental budget, tooling decisions, and resource planning with VP
- Represent team in executive reviews and communicate risks/trade-offs to senior leadership
- Champion Agile/Scrum, continuous improvement, and a strong engineering culture across distributed teams
Key requirements- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field (or equivalent practical experience)
- 12+ years of progressive software engineering experience
- 5+ years in engineering leadership overseeing multiple teams
- Cloud-native applications experience on AWS/Azure/GCP with microservices, containers (Docker/Kubernetes), and serverless
- Strong background in middleware and data services (REST/gRPC, Kafka, data pipelines, SQL/NoSQL)
- Ability to lead through organizational change and deliver cross-team initiatives
- Experience partnering with Product Management on roadmaps and communicating strategy to executives
- Solid understanding of SSDLC, CI/CD pipelines, and modern observability/monitoring
