Overview As a Senior Manager on Cohen & Co's SALT team, you will steer complex state income/franchise tax engagements for investment funds and asset managers, with a focus on New York and Tri-State tax matters. You'll act as a trusted advisor, delivering strategic compliance, planning, and structuring solutions while mentoring the team and contributing to practice growth. This role blends technical tax leadership with client relationship management and cross line collaboration. You will drive multi state analysis, nexus work, and entity structuring to help clients optimize state tax positions. Responsibilities- Lead complex state income and franchise tax consulting and compliance engagements, including multi-state apportionment and nexus analysis
- Advise on state tax implications for investment partnerships, funds, and management company structures
- Develop and implement state income tax planning strategies (e.g., PTE elections, credits, incentives)
- Serve as a technical SME on direct SALT matters with emphasis on New York state tax
- Monitor legislative/regulatory developments and provide strategic guidance to clients and teams
- Serve as primary relationship lead for SALT engagements with proactive, high-quality advice
- Collaborate across service lines for integrated service delivery
- Review and mentor staff, fostering a high-performance, growth-oriented team
- Contribute to business development and growth of the direct SALT practice
Key requirements- CPA, EA or JD required
- 8+ years of progressive SALT experience focused on direct tax
- New York state tax expertise required
- Experience advising investment companies, funds, or complex entity structures preferred
- Big 4 or large public firm background preferred
- Strong leadership, client management, and communication skills
- Interest in business development and growing a SALT practice
- Proficiency in tax research tools and Microsoft Office
