Overview In this role you defend insured WC claims as part of Selective's Chicago staff counsel team, handling cases from start to resolution. You will analyze complex issues, conduct research, draft pleadings, and lead trial and appeal activities with a focus on timely, effective client service. You'll communicate with courts, witnesses, and claims professionals to coordinate defense strategies and keep stakeholders informed. You'll also contribute to training within the Claims Department and stay current with evolving laws. Responsibilities- Represent insured before courts and present witnesses and evidence
- Develop and present defense strategies through legal research and analysis
- Prepare pleadings, discovery, motions, and briefs in support of defense
- Attend and manage trial and appellate activities as assigned
- Provide timely legal advice to clients and claims professionals
- Assist in creating training materials and seminars for the Claim Department
- Communicate with court personnel, witnesses, opposing counsel, and clients per office procedures
- Ensure prompt, efficient disposition of assigned cases
- Travel for depositions, court appearances, meetings, and related events (approx. 20% travel)
- Stay current with market trends and pursue continuing legal education
Key requirements- Excellent customer service, writing, and oral communication skills
- Independent judgment, research, litigation, and analytic abilities
- Strong legal research and writing skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Edge or Chrome
- Legal case management software experience
- Typing skills
- Knowledge of the business unit and industry (preferred)
- Valid state driver's license in good standing
- 15+ years litigation experience (7+ years for Trial Attorney) with CT Workers' Compensation experience preferred
- Juris Doctor degree from ABA-accredited law school
- Bar admission in CT (multi-state admittance preferred)
