Commissioning and Substation Services Engineer

Overview

In this role you will provide field engineering support for maintenance, construction, testing and commissioning of substations up to 500 kV. You work closely with multi-disciplinary teams to ensure safe, reliable operation and timely project completion. You'll handle commissioning, testing analyses, and on-site technical guidance while embracing FirstEnergy's safety culture. The position offers hands-on field work across substations and potential regional collaboration, with impact on system reliability and customer restoration. This is a field-heavy role that combines engineering rigor with operational execution to reinforce the grid.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain safe work practices and ensure compliance with regulations
  • Commission new transmission substation equipment prior to operation
  • Develop check-out guides, approve test results, and create energization plans
  • Provide on-site technical support during maintenance and commissioning
  • Apply engineering judgment to resolve field design/installation issues
  • Assist in updating maintenance practices for new technologies and regulatory changes
  • Audit maintenance and testing documentation for regulatory completeness
  • Provide emergency technical support to restore service and implement mobile substations
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure timely project delivery
  • Mentor technicians and junior staff in technical subjects
Key requirements
  • Bachelors in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering (ABET)
  • 3 years engineering experience
  • Experience with substation equipment design, maintenance or testing
  • Knowledge of microprocessor-based protection and control equipment; familiarity with SEL, Enoserve RTS, Doble testing (plus)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Driver's license and ability to travel; 45-minute commute requirement
  • FE license preferred; PE license preferred for higher level
  • Willingness to work after hours and on-call for emergencies
