Overview

In this professional faculty role, you will advance student-centered learning and research in computational physics and data-driven science. You'll develop and teach computational labs, mentor students, and support faculty research with your computational expertise while helping to strengthen departmental infrastructure. You will collaborate across disciplines to enable secure, scalable, and reproducible computational research. This position supports BYU's mission by integrating rigorous computing with education and scholarly impact.

Responsibilities
  • Teach and develop computational laboratory courses; mentor undergraduate and graduate students
  • Support faculty research with computational expertise and contribute to department-wide research infrastructure
  • Redevelop computational lab courses to incorporate contemporary methods and AI-enabled coding practices
  • Provide guidance on numerical analysis, parallelization, code validation, and performance optimization
  • Collaborate with faculty, students, and technical staff across disciplines and with IT/research computing teams
  • Ensure secure, ethical, and reproducible computing practices in research activities
  • Assist in governance, service, and administrative duties within the department
Key requirements
  • M.S. or Ph.D. in physics, astronomy, computational science, or closely related field
  • Demonstrated expertise in scientific computing (numerical methods, data analysis, computational modeling)
  • Proficiency in Python, C/C++, Julia, or similar languages; familiarity with scientific libraries
  • Experience with software development practices: version control, testing, documentation
  • Ability to mentor students or collaborators in computational methods and programming
  • Familiarity with HPC environments, parallelization, and cloud-based resources
  • Understanding of reproducible research, data management, and transparent workflows
  • Strong written and verbal communication and commitment to student-centered teaching and mentoring
