Overview

In this role, you will design and review high voltage substation layouts and related diagrams to support transmission or utility-scale projects. You'll work with cross functional teams to ensure compliant, constructible designs and deliverables across engineering, procurement, and construction phases. You'll perform electrical studies, develop specifications and submittals, and support construction, commissioning, and field problem solving. The position offers strong growth through mentoring and exposure to FATs, vendor reviews, and site energization efforts.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and approve engineering deliverables: single-line/three-line diagrams, bus arrangements, grounding systems, conduit layouts, and equipment foundations
  • Perform electrical calculations and studies: short circuit, bus loading, conductor sizing, voltage drop, grounding
  • Create/review specs and data sheets for major substation equipment
  • Coordinate with procurement on vendor submittals and RFI responses
  • Interface with construction/commissioning teams; review drawings and support field changes
  • Ensure compliance with IEEE/ANSI/NESC/NEC and QA/QC processes
  • Support design through construction and commissioning: FATs, witness installations, energization
  • Collaborate with civil/structural, protection & control, PM, and site teams for coordinated design
  • Support change-order reviews, cost estimating, constructability review, and risk identification
  • Mentor junior engineers/drafters and provide quality reviews of drawings and calculations
Key requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline
  • 5-10 years of substation design/engineering experience (transmission or utility scale) or equivalent heavy-commercial construction background
  • Strong knowledge of high voltage equipment, bus systems, grounding, control/relay, station service
  • Ability to read/interpret/produce single-line, three-line, schematic, and layout drawings
  • Experience with technical specifications and vendor data reviews
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, MicroStation, ETAP, SKM, Mathcad or similar power-system tools
  • Excellent written and verbal communication; cross functional collaboration
  • Willingness to travel 10-30%
  • Familiarity with design-build/EPC support is a plus
