Assistant Vice President - Primary Casualty

Overview

As AVP - Primary Casualty Claims, you will lead a six-person team to deliver proactive, accurate claims handling that aligns with policy and regulatory requirements. You'll drive process improvements, support strategic initiatives, and provide technical expertise across primary casualty claims. The role collaborates with underwriting, risk management, and legal to achieve timely, equitable resolutions while promoting a customer-focused culture. This is a high-impact position within Starr's growing, entrepreneurially minded organization. You will shape claims operations and contribute to technology-driven enhancements.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and develop a team of six primary casualty claims professionals
  • Oversee all aspects of the primary casualty claims process for efficiency, accuracy, and policy/regulatory compliance
  • Review and authorize settlements beyond adjuster authority and ensure proper reserving practices
  • Analyze loss trends and deliver management reports on outcomes, litigation, large losses, and performance indicators
  • Collaborate with underwriting, risk management, legal, and other departments to support company goals
  • Develop and implement best practices, and update claims policies and procedures
  • Handle escalated or complex claims, including mediations, settlement conferences, and liaison with reinsurers and brokers
  • Foster a customer-focused culture delivering exceptional service to policyholders, claimants, and internal stakeholders
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and industry best practices
  • Contribute to strategic planning, including technology enhancements and process improvements
  • Participate in recruitment and onboarding of new team members
Key requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field ( JD or advanced degree preferred)
  • 5+ years of progressive casualty claims experience with emphasis on general liability
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational abilities
  • Data-driven mindset with experience using claim management tools (PowerBI)
  • Leadership/management experience preferred
  • Excellent knowledge of claims handling, legal/regulatory requirements, and industry trends
  • Proven analytical, decision-making, and negotiation skills
  • Experience with litigation management and high-severity casualty claims
