Underwriting Consultant (Life Sciences)

Overview

As a Life Sciences Underwriter, you assess risk for larger accounts using analytical, pricing and sales skills to deliver tailored insurance solutions. You work within CNA's underwriting strategies, collaborating with home office and field teams to manage portfolio risk and growth. You will apply predictive tools and industry knowledge to price and structure coverage while staying compliant with regulations and CAT guidelines. This role offers cross-functional exposure, opportunities to expand in a growing specialty and a path toward more senior underwriting roles. You'll contribute to CNA's mission by helping customers manage risk with expert underwriting and thoughtful guidance.

Responsibilities
  • Review applications and financials to determine risk acceptability per CNA guidelines
  • Price risk using pricing components, rating methods and predictive tools
  • Utilize underwriting tools (RST, BPMT, Merlin) to ensure guideline compliance
  • Demonstrate technical underwriting via thorough account reviews and documentation
  • Analyze adverse decisions, rate appeals, requirements, and declinations to drive results
  • Follow CAT guidelines to minimize exposure and price appropriately
  • Stay current on state/territory issues, regulations, and trends
  • Manage portfolio to achieve premium, profitability, retention and mix goals
  • Optimize producer performance and identify cross-sell opportunities
  • Build and maintain producer relationships and pipeline; collaborate across lines of business
  • Communicate CNA's position at the point of sale and support distributor plans
Key requirements
  • Knowledge of underwriting processes, coverages, and decision-making for renewals and new business
  • Ability to interact effectively with internal and external partners in a matrix environment
  • Ability to uncover needs, position solutions, handle objections and close deals
  • Judgment, negotiation and sound business decisions within authority
  • Strong problem-solving, rapid learning, adaptability and prioritization of multiple projects
  • 3-10+ years of related underwriting experience (varies by role)
