Transmission Planning Engineer

Overview

In this role you will support transmission planning across FirstEnergy's networks, focusing on safe, reliable operation of bulk and subtransmission lines and substations. You will collaborate with operating companies, other utilities, and regulators to study interconnections and capital projects that strengthen reliability. You will help shape the capital portfolio and provide technical input during storms and abnormal events. This is a hands-on opportunity to impact system planning and regulatory filings within a mission-driven utility.

Responsibilities
  • Provide technical studies and analysis to develop transmission and subtransmission projects and budgets for reliability and integrity of the FE system
  • Perform bulk and area transmission studies in accordance with NERC, PJM, and FE planning criteria
  • Propose economically justified mitigation for planning deficiencies and, if needed, develop operating solutions for timely implementation
  • Develop annual capital budgets with cost estimates and presentations for capital portfolio processes
  • Study connections of new loads, generators, and merchant transmission projects
  • Support Operations Centers during severe weather, high loading, or abnormal events with rapid assessments and recommendations
  • Engage with industry groups (NERC, RFC, PJM) to align FE practices and advocate for FE methods
  • Prepare responses to regulatory information requests and provide technical testimony as assigned
  • Support submittals for compliance-related planning activities and assist in maintaining planning documents and procedures
  • Possibly travel across the FE system for industry activities and project work
Key requirements
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or equivalent (ABET)
  • 2 years of engineering experience (Engineer II)
  • PE license or alternative degrees with ABET-structured advancement may be considered
  • FE Certificate preferred
  • 3 years of engineering experience (Engineer III)
  • 5 years of engineering experience with BS in Engineering or 7 years with BS in Engineering Technology (Engineer IV)
