Senior Structural Engineer (Hydraulic Structure Design)

Overview

HDR seeks an experienced Hydraulic Structures Engineer to lead design and assessment of dams, levees, spillways, gates, and other hydraulic structures. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams on diverse water infrastructure projects for public and utility clients. The role combines independent project engineering with mentorship of junior staff and potential growth of HDR's structural services. You will help deliver high-quality solutions on time and on budget while advancing HDR's collaborative, employee-owned culture.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct structural analyses, evaluations and designs for hydraulic structures
  • Prepare contract documents including drawings, specifications, design criteria and cost estimates
  • Lead design of new or rehabilitated hydraulic structures (dams, spillways, gates, etc.)
  • Perform engineering assignments addressing unique structural elements with limited code guidance
  • Coordinate structural design with multi-disciplinary teams
  • Work independently as project engineer and provide mentorship to staff
  • Review design tasks to ensure accuracy and compliance with standards
  • Perform inspections and structural assessments of existing structures
Key requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
  • Minimum of 10 years structural engineering experience related to building design
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license
  • Experience with analytical software such as AutoCAD, RAM, ETABS, SAFE or equivalents
  • Ability to design and detail in steel, concrete, masonry and wood
  • Understanding of gravity and lateral analysis
  • Experience in engineering consulting or architectural/engineering firms
  • Commitment to employee-owned culture
  • Team coordination with multi-disciplinary groups
  • Leadership and mentorship
  • Strong communication and collaboration
  • Finite element modeling
  • CAD and structural analysis tools (e.g., SAP2000, LPILE, ETABS, RAM, SAFE)
  • Dynamic analysis concepts (e.g., seismic time history)
