Overview

In this role you will manage end-to-end payroll, maintain precise bookkeeping, and prepare client accounts within a Basildon CA practice. You will support a diverse client portfolio, liaising with clients and colleagues to ensure accurate financial records and timely payroll submissions. You'll work across payroll, bookkeeping, and accounts prep, enabling compliance and insightful financial reporting. Responsibilities
  • Process weekly, fortnightly, and monthly payrolls for clients
  • Calculate SSP, SMP, SPP, overtime, bonuses, and student loan obligations
  • Manage workplace pensions and auto-enrolment compliance
  • Submit RTI returns and process P45s, P60s, P11Ds
  • Resolve payroll queries for clients and employees
  • Maintain digital records using Xero, QuickBooks, or Sage
  • Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, and supplier statements
  • Process sales and purchase invoices and expense claims
  • Prepare and submit quarterly VAT returns under Making Tax Digital (MTD)
  • Identify and correct bookkeeping anomalies
  • Prepare financial accounts up to trial balance and assist with year-end accounts
  • Draft monthly/quarterly management accounts and collaborate with senior accountants
Key requirements
  • Proven experience in a similar role within a UK public practice environment
  • Strong working knowledge of UK payroll legislation and HMRC regulations
  • Professional qualification (AAT Level 3/4, ICB, IAB) or qualified by experience
  • Proficiency in cloud accounting software (Xero, QuickBooks, Sage)
  • Intermediate Excel skills (VLOOKUPs, pivot tables, data formatting)
