Overview As a Substation Structural Engineer in HDR's Power Delivery team, you design and support high-voltage substation structures across their lifecycle. You collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver safe, reliable, and high-quality infrastructure for utility and energy clients. You will lead structural tasks, coordinate with fabricators, and mentor junior staff, contributing to HDR's mission of impactful, world-class engineering. This role offers cross-location teamwork and opportunities to showcase technical capabilities at industry events.
Responsibilities- Lead and oversee structural design tasks for substation components (rolled steel shapes, lattice framing, folded plate tubular shapes) including detailed design and fabrication-ready drawings
- Lead foundation design for substation structures (drilled piers, spread footings, driven piles) using industry-standard software
- Collaborate on substation layout designs and associated BOMs
- Prepare or review construction specifications and materials
- Perform quality checks per HDR QMS requirements and reviews across teams as needed
- Coordinate with transmission line civil/structural engineers to share resources and develop standards
- Mentor and supervise EITs or CADD/Designers; support multiple projects across locations
- May assist in developing technical papers or presentations for industry events
Key requirements- Bachelor's in Civil or Structural Engineering
- Professional engineering license (PE or P.Eng) recognized by licensing board
- Minimum 5 years of technical design experience in high voltage switchyard and substation projects
- Experience with AutoCAD, RISA (Risa 3D, RisaFoundation), L-Pile, MFAD, Mathcad Prime, and either MicroStation or AutoCAD
- Knowledge of AISC-360, ASCE-7, ACI-318 and related standards
