Overview

As a Product Development Engineer at 3M, you will lead the mechanical design of next-gen automated robotic tools from concept to production. You'll build robust mechanical assemblies and enclosures, integrating motors, sensors and control systems. Collaboration with electronics, controls, manufacturing and suppliers will scale designs to production while ensuring safety, reliability and manufacturability. This role offers hands-on prototyping, IP generation and cross-functional impact in a global tech environment.

Responsibilities
  • Lead mechanical design and development of automated robotic installation tools from concept to production
  • Design precision mechanisms and assemblies using 3D CAD (e.g., SolidWorks)
  • Create mechanical enclosures, components and assemblies
  • Design for robustness, serviceability and long-term field reliability
  • Integrate motors, drives, encoders, sensors into assemblies with electronics and controls engineers
  • Develop motion and actuation concepts; collaborate on servo/torque-motor and control-system integration
  • Perform tolerance stack-up, kinematics, structural, thermal and load analyses
  • Assemble, characterize, calibrate and troubleshoot prototypes and engineering builds
  • Select mechanical components and finishes balancing performance, cost and manufacturability
  • Drive product architecture, prototyping and verification activities
  • Create mechanical documentation: drawings, GD&T, BOMs, design records
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, suppliers and external partners to scale to production
  • Interact with regulatory teams for safety and machinery standards compliance
  • Generate IP positions, including invention submissions and patents
  • Communicate test results to internal and external stakeholders
  • Support development and commercialization of products delivering energy reliably and sustainably
Key requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering with verified graduation
  • 3+ years designing electromechanical or automated equipment from concept to production
  • 3+ years of experience with 3D CAD (SolidWorks) and engineering documentation (drawings, GD&T, BOMs)
  • 3+ years designing mechanisms, motion systems, and precision assemblies with cross-domain integration
